GST/HST Registration Made Simple for Ontario and Canadian Businesses
Bestax provides a commercial registration service for sole proprietors, partnerships and corporations that need a GST/HST program account. We help you determine whether registration is required now, whether voluntary registration fits your situation, and which effective date should be used. If you prefer to complete the process yourself, use our step-by-step guide to register for HST in Ontario. The service page stays focused on paid support, while the guide covers the DIY process.
If you already have a nine-digit CRA Business Number, your GST/HST account is added under that BN. If you do not have a BN, CRA can issue one during GST/HST account registration. Bestax reviews the setup before submission and identifies the correct route when Business Registration Online is not available for your ownership or residency situation.

When HST Registration Becomes Mandatory
For most businesses, the small-supplier threshold is $30,000 of worldwide taxable supplies, including zero-rated supplies and taxable supplies of associates. Exempt supplies, financial services, sales of capital property and goodwill are excluded from this calculation.
Not Sure Which Effective Date Applies?
Bestax reviews your sales by calendar quarter before registration so you do not start collecting GST/HST too early or too late.
You exceed $30,000 in one calendar quarter
You stop being a small supplier on the sale that pushes your total over $30,000. You must start charging GST/HST on that supply. Your registration effective date is no later than that day, and CRA requires the application within 29 days of the effective date.
You exceed $30,000 over four or fewer consecutive calendar quarters
If you do not cross $30,000 in a single quarter but exceed the threshold across the previous four or fewer consecutive quarters, you stop being a small supplier at the end of the month following the quarter in which you crossed the threshold. Your registration starts no later than your first taxable supply after that point.
You are below the threshold and want to register voluntarily
A small supplier that makes taxable supplies can generally choose voluntary registration. The effective date is usually the request date or up to 30 days earlier. Once voluntarily registered, the business normally needs to stay registered for at least one year unless its commercial activity ends.
You operate a taxi or commercial ride-sharing business
Taxi operators and commercial ride-sharing drivers must register even when their revenue is below the normal small-supplier threshold. Registration starts when taxable passenger transportation services begin.

Register for an HST Number With Bestax
When you ask Bestax to register for an HST number, we first check the facts that control the registration date. That includes your taxable sales, zero-rated sales, associated businesses, business structure, province, and whether you already have a CRA Business Number.
We then prepare the registration details, confirm the correct program account setup, and support submission through the CRA route available for your situation. CRA now requires a CRA account to access Business Registration Online. BRO also cannot handle several cases, including a Canadian business with only non-resident owners and certain businesses owned by another business. We identify the alternative registration route where those restrictions apply.
Why Bestax for HST Number Registration
Effective-date review before submission
The date matters because it controls when you must start charging GST/HST. We review the threshold facts first instead of treating registration as a simple form-filling exercise.
Business Number and program account review
We confirm whether you already have a BN and whether the GST/HST RT account needs to be added. If no BN exists, we explain the CRA setup required with the registration.
Current CRA online-registration support
We prepare the information CRA asks for and guide the BRO or alternate process that applies to your ownership and residency situation.
Province and place-of-supply guidance
Your customer’s province and the place-of-supply rules can change the rate you charge. We help you avoid assuming every Canadian sale uses the Ontario rate.
Registration linked to ongoing compliance
We explain the filing frequency, invoicing, record keeping and Input Tax Credit requirements that begin after registration. Ongoing return filing can be handled through our GST/HST filing service.
One team for tax and business setup
If you are still forming the business, we can coordinate registration with company setup, payroll and corporate tax support so your CRA accounts fit the way the business actually operates.
Our Complete GST/HST Registration Support
Our GST/HST registration service is designed to take you from “Do I need an account?” to a clear post-registration setup. Bestax can support the following work:
- Confirm whether registration is mandatory or voluntary based on your taxable supplies.
- Review the registration effective date using the correct single-quarter or multi-quarter CRA rule.
- Check your existing nine-digit Business Number and the GST/HST program account requirement.
- Prepare the business and personal information required for the application.
- Support HST number registration through BRO or the applicable alternate CRA route.
- Review backdating requirements if the business should have registered earlier.
- Explain the GST/HST rate rules for sales into different provinces.
- Confirm what changes after registration, including invoicing, filing, remittance and records.
- Identify eligible Input Tax Credit opportunities based on proper supporting documents.
- Connect the new account to ongoing bookkeeping, tax and GST/HST return filing support.
Do I Need to Register Now?
Use this quick check as a starting point. Bestax confirms the final registration date from your actual sales history and business activities.
| Your situation | CRA position for most businesses | What Bestax checks |
|---|---|---|
| Under $30,000 across four consecutive quarters and never over $30,000 in one quarter | Usually a small supplier. Registration is generally optional if you make taxable supplies. | Whether voluntary registration would create useful ITCs and whether any special rule applies. |
| Over $30,000 in one calendar quarter | Mandatory. Start charging on the supply that pushes you over the threshold. | The exact sale and effective date, plus the 29-day application window. |
| Over $30,000 across four or fewer consecutive quarters, but not in one quarter | Mandatory after the small-supplier status ends under the multi-quarter rule. | The quarter-end calculation, following month and first taxable supply after small-supplier status ends. |
| Taxi or commercial ride-sharing activity | Mandatory even below the normal threshold. | The date taxable passenger transportation services started. |
| Only exempt supplies | A GST/HST account generally cannot be opened solely for exempt activities. | Whether any activities are taxable or zero-rated instead of exempt. |
What You Need for HST Registration Online
For HST registration online, CRA asks for enough information to identify the person submitting the request, the business, the effective date and the expected revenue. Having the details ready also matters because BRO cannot save an unfinished registration and the session times out after 10 minutes of inactivity.

- Proposed or required GST/HST registration effective date.
- GST/HST fiscal year information.
- Annual taxable revenue or a reasonable estimate for a new business.
- Legal business name and existing Business Number, if one has already been issued.
- Business type, such as sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or trust.
- Names and SINs of owners where CRA requires them for the registration.
- Physical and mailing addresses.
- Description of the main business activity.
- Personal authentication information required by CRA for the online requester.
- CRA account access for BRO, or the information needed for an alternative registration route.
Bestax checks the information before registration so the business name, ownership, revenue and effective date are consistent with your actual setup.
HST Registration in Ontario and GST/HST Rates Across Canada
HST registration in Ontario uses the federal GST/HST account, but the rate charged on a sale depends on the place-of-supply rules. A business located in Ontario does not automatically charge 13% on every sale, and a business located outside Ontario can still need to charge 13% when a taxable supply is considered made in Ontario.
| Province / territory | GST/HST rate | Registration / administration note |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 13% HST | CRA administers the GST/HST account. |
| Nova Scotia | 14% HST | 14% rate applies from April 1, 2025. |
| New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island | 15% HST | Participating provinces use HST. |
| Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon | 5% GST | Separate provincial sales tax rules also apply in some provinces. |
| Quebec | 5% GST plus 9.975% QST | Revenu Québec generally administers GST/HST and QST for businesses physically located in Quebec. |
Bestax reviews where your supplies are considered made before you set invoice tax rates. This is especially useful for e-commerce, consulting, delivery and businesses selling to customers in more than one province.
What Happens After You Register for an HST Number
Registration creates ongoing obligations. Bestax can connect the new account to your bookkeeping and return filing process so the first filing period does not become a surprise.
Need help after registration? Our GST/HST return filing service can handle the ongoing reporting and remittance workflow.
Charge and collect the correct GST/HST rate on taxable supplies from the correct effective date.
Show the required tax information on invoices and receipts.
File a GST/HST return for every reporting period, including a nil return when there is no activity.
File electronically unless you fall within a CRA exception. Electronic filing is mandatory for most registrants for periods ending in 2024 and later.
Remit GST/HST collected or collectible according to the return rules and your payment deadline.
Keep supporting GST/HST records, usually for six years from the end of the year to which they relate.
Keep proper invoices and documents for Input Tax Credit claims.
Review whether GST/HST paid on qualifying property, inventory or certain prepaid amounts around the registration date can support ITCs under the new-registrant rules.
Already Over the Threshold or Registering Late?
If your business should already have been registered, do not choose an effective date just to match the application date. The correct date can affect tax you should have charged, returns that need to be filed, ITCs, and amounts owing.
CRA has a specific process for registrations that need an effective date more than 30 days before the application. Current CRA guidance also confirms that evidence can be required for backdating. Bestax reviews your sales history, determines the likely effective date, organizes the supporting information and helps you move from late registration into ongoing compliance.

Crossed the Threshold and Did Not Register?
We can review the effective date and the periods that need attention before the registration is finalized.
Common HST Registration Problems Bestax Helps Prevent
Using the wrong threshold date
The single-quarter and multi-quarter tests create different effective dates. A generic “register once annual revenue is $30,000” rule is not accurate enough.
Leaving associated-business revenue out of the test
The small-supplier calculation includes worldwide taxable supplies of associates, not only the sales of one operating account.
Charging the Ontario rate on every Canadian sale
The applicable rate follows place-of-supply rules. The seller’s home province alone does not decide the rate.
Registering voluntarily without planning for the ongoing work
Voluntary registration brings filing, collection and remittance obligations, and the business normally stays registered for at least one year.
Assuming BRO works for every ownership structure
CRA lists restrictions for BRO. Bestax identifies the route that fits the business instead of forcing an ineligible online application.
Ignoring the first filing period
A new account can create filing obligations even when the business has little or no activity. Nil returns can still be required.

Frequently Asked Questions
For most businesses making taxable supplies, you are generally a small supplier if you do not exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or across four consecutive calendar quarters. You can still choose voluntary registration. Taxi and commercial ride-sharing businesses have a separate mandatory rule, and other special entities can have different thresholds.
It depends on how you cross the threshold. If you exceed $30,000 in one calendar quarter, you start charging GST/HST on the supply that takes you over and must apply within 29 days of the effective date. If you cross the threshold over four or fewer consecutive quarters, the effective date follows the separate multi-quarter rule.
Yes, if you make taxable supplies and qualify to register. Voluntary registration can allow eligible ITCs on business purchases, but it also creates ongoing charging, filing and remittance duties. A voluntary registrant normally remains registered for at least one year before cancellation, unless commercial activity stops.
The GST/HST program account is added to your existing nine-digit BN. The account identifier normally uses the BN followed by the RT program code and a four-digit reference number, such as RT0001. Bestax can review the existing BN and prepare the account setup.
Not always. CRA asks for your BN if you already have one. If you do not have a BN, CRA can issue one at the same time as the GST/HST account registration. The correct process still depends on your business structure, ownership and access to CRA registration services.
Bestax can prepare and support the registration process, including authorized representative workflows where available. CRA requires a CRA account for access to BRO and lists situations where BRO cannot be used. We check the route before submission so you know what access or alternate registration method is required.
A late registration can require an earlier effective date and catch-up returns. CRA has a backdating process for effective dates more than 30 days before the application and can ask for supporting evidence. Bestax can review your sales history and organize the registration and catch-up work.
It uses the federal GST/HST program account, but the rate depends on where the taxable supply is considered made. Ontario uses 13% HST. Other participating provinces use 14% or 15% HST, while non-participating provinces use 5% GST with separate provincial sales taxes in some provinces. Quebec generally administers GST/HST and QST through Revenu Québec for businesses physically located there.
You need to charge the correct tax, keep proper invoices and records, file a return for each reporting period, remit amounts owing, and keep documents supporting ITCs. Most GST/HST registrants are required to file electronically. Bestax can move the account directly into an ongoing filing and bookkeeping workflow.
In specific cases, new registrants can claim ITCs for GST/HST paid or payable on qualifying property or inventory on hand when registration starts, and certain prepaid amounts that relate to the post-registration period. Eligibility depends on the expense, use in commercial activities and supporting documents, so the items should be reviewed before the first return is filed.
